Common building questions

Helpful answers about shed approvals, regulations, planning requirements, design, engineering and pricing.

General Questions

  • We design and build a wide range of steel structures including farm sheds, machinery sheds, garages, workshops, storage sheds, commercial sheds and custom steel buildings. If it needs a roof and steel frame, we can usually make it happen.

  • We service Queensland and surrounding regions through our network of local distributors, each delivering projects with local knowledge for their area and conditions.

  • Yes. Every shed is custom designed to suit your site, purpose and requirements. No two builds are the same: size, layout, doors, openings and finishes are all tailored.

  • Premium Australian steel and components meeting relevant Australian Standards, including BlueScope steel and COLORBOND cladding, for strength, durability and long-term performance in local conditions.

  • Because we don't do one-size-fits-all. Our sheds are custom engineered, built for Australian conditions and backed by local expertise. We focus on getting it right the first time so your shed works hard, looks good and lasts for years.

Design & Customisation

  • No. A custom-designed shed doesn't automatically cost more. Our proven systems and 3D design software let distributors create tailored designs efficiently. Final cost depends on size, materials and features; because every shed is designed specifically for you, you only pay for what's included.

  • Roller doors, sliding doors, personal access doors, windows, insulation, skylights, mezzanine floors, internal walls and ventilation options can all be included.

  • Yes. We offer the full range of COLORBOND colours so you can match your shed to your home, existing buildings or surrounding landscape.

  • Yes. Awnings and verandahs can be added for extra covered storage, access or outdoor working areas.

  • Absolutely. Many customers combine storage, workshop space, machinery housing and office areas in one building.

Approvals & Engineering

  • In many cases, yes. Most sheds are class 10a structures under the National Construction Code, and approval requirements depend on size, height, position and zoning. A building approval from a private certifier is typically required before construction. We make this easy: we guide you through council requirements, handle engineering compliance and prepare the paperwork.

  • It depends on local council rules, the type of shed and its height. Low-height small sheds usually need at least 1 to 1.5 metres from the boundary; larger or taller sheds may need greater setbacks or development approval. Special zones such as flood-prone areas or heritage overlays can add requirements. Your local team can advise on your specific property.

  • Every R&F building is engineered to meet Australian Standards and National Construction Code requirements for your site, including wind ratings and terrain category. Site-specific engineering is standard, not an upgrade.

Construction Process

  • Timelines depend on size, complexity and approvals. Because our steel is manufactured in Queensland and delivered by self-unload trucks at a 95% on-time, in-full rate, construction starts when promised in most cases.

  • Yes. Alongside complete design-and-build projects we deliver DIY shed kits Queensland-wide, with a bill of materials carrying member labels and supplier part numbers to simplify your review on-site.
